Jang Hoon Plot
Jang Hoon, whom we visited last week in the Cafe West 19 in Palpan-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, admitted to his guilt about making an historical drama. It’s not because the subject causes some to be uncomfortable or people doubt his political views.
The film shows people who risk their lives to fight the brutality that is the rule of law by military. The footage of soldiers walking on elderly and women and savagely attacking the victims with weapons and clubs are shocking.
I was around five or six years old at the time of my participation in the 18 May Democratization Movement. For someone who had never been through it, I had difficulty managing Gwangju. I was told that there were numerous memorial services taking place at Gwangju during May. It was a thing that happened forty years ago, yet it’s still happening.
